Alfred Howard Smeed [sm.3.3.1]
Alfred Howard Smeed was the first child of Alfred Smeed & Lilian Josephine Marie Mulligan born August 23rd, 1882 at 19 Turle Rd, Islington Middlesex.
In 1891 Alfred was with his grandparents Thomas & Sarah Smeed at the time of the census at Kingswood, Horne, Surrey.
In July-September 1900 Alfred married Elizabeth Hetty Lillian Warner in Fulham, Middlesex. Elizabeth was born April-June 1880 in Chelsea, Middlesex, the daughter of Emily Maria Frampton & Fred Warner, a tailor’s cutter. Elizabeth & her 2 brothers Harry Walder & Bertram Oswald, were all christened on September 17th, 1882 at St Lawrence, Northampton & their address was given as Ball St, Kensington.
In 1901 Alfred & Elizabeth Hetty were living at 133 Hurlingham Rd, Fulham, next door to Elizabeth’s parents. They had a 3 month old daughter, Norah Lilian, & Alfred was employed as a commercial clerk.
In 1911 daughter Norah was visiting her grandparents, Emily & Fred Warner, at 204 Upper Richmond Rd, Putney, London. It is not known where Alfred & Elizabeth were at the time of the census.
Norah was to become a stage & screen actress in the 1920s to 1960s in England & USA. She took her father’s middle name as her stage name & thus became Norah Howard. Norah toured Canada in 1939 & settled in America with her husband pianist, Stuart Ross.

Alfred died, aged 34, in July-September 1917 at Godstone, Surrey.
